May 14, 9:40 AM. My backyard, 0.4 acres, the slope behind the garage.

The grass was still wet from last night's rain. I was standing at the bottom of the hill that drops 22 degrees over about 40 feet. My string-and-stakes map says it's the steepest section of my lot. The ANTHBOT M5 arrived in a box that weighed 28 pounds. Unboxing took 20 minutes. Setup took another hour and a half, mostly because the RTK antenna needs a clear view of the sky, and my yard has two mature maples that throw shade over the eastern corner.

The mapping process was the easiest I've used. You walk the perimeter with the mower in "push" mode, then mark obstacles in the app. It took me 14 minutes to map my whole yard. The mower's vision system (a camera on the front) picks up objects like garden hoses and dog toys that aren't on the map. That's genuinely useful, because Biscuit leaves a bone somewhere new every single day.

First mow on the hill: it made it up the 22-degree slope with no drama. The rear wheels have a tread pattern that bites better than anything I've tested. But the real test comes in week two, after the grass gets long and the ground gets soft.

A client of mine, a warehouse robot engineer who likes a challenge, bought the ECOVACS Goat A2000 after I told him about my testing. He set it up in 30 minutes, which impressed even me. The boundary wire took him another 45 minutes to lay around his 0.3-acre yard. He texted me a photo of the first mow. The stripes were gorgeous. The edge trimming was the best I've seen, getting within 1.5 inches of the fence line.

Then he hit the dock placement issue.

The Goat's dock has to sit in an open area, not against a wall. The manual says it needs 8 feet of clearance in front. My client put it against his garage wall anyway, and the mower pulled out 3 feet, stopped, and displayed "Navigation error." It was cluelessly lost. He moved the dock to the middle of his yard, which means he now trips over it every time he walks to the grill.

Week 2: The Mulberry Leaf Test

My neighbor's mulberry tree drops leaves that are about 3 inches long and slightly sticky. They mat together like wet paper. Every robot mower I've tested has struggled with them. The ANTHBOT M5 handled them fine on flat ground, but on the slope, the leaves collected under the deck and the mower stalled twice.

The fix: I ran the mower more often. The M5's battery handles about 1,500 square feet per charge, and my yard is 0.4 acres. That means it takes 3 sessions to cover everything. When I scheduled it to run every other day, the leaves never had a chance to build up. The mower's 4-inch blade clearance helps too. It's not a leaf vacuum, but it processes small debris without choking.

The ECOVACS Goat, meanwhile, handled leaves better. Its blade is 8 inches wide, and the deck is open enough that leaves pass through. But it still couldn't get up my slope in wet conditions. On day 12, after a half-inch of rain, it slid 6 feet down the hill and cried for help. The alarm is loud enough to hear from inside my house. I did. Twice.


Week 3: The Mid-Range Contender, Luba 2 AWD ($2,299)

I borrowed a Luba 2 AWD from a dealer friend for two weeks. This is the mower everyone asks about. It's got four-wheel drive, which sounds like the answer to every slope problem. The price is $2,299, which is the most expensive unit I've tested this season.

The Luba 2 climbed my 22-degree slope in dry conditions without breaking a sweat. The AWD system is real. The rear wheels push, the front wheels pull, and the mower just goes. On wet grass, it still made it, though I saw some wheel slip near the top.

But here's the thing: the Luba 2 uses RTK navigation only, no vision system. My neighbor's shed went up in April, and the Luba 2 doesn't know it exists. It tried to drive through the shed on day 16. The bumper stopped it, but the mower spent 8 minutes trying to figure out what to do before it gave up and returned to the dock.

The ANTHBOT M5, with its camera, saw the shed and mapped around it in one pass. That's the difference between a navigation system that thinks and one that follows a map.

The Luba 2 also has a problem with tree cover. My maples block the RTK signal in the eastern corner of the yard, and the Luba 2 gets cluelessly lost about once a week. It's not a bad mower. It's just not worth $2,299 when a $899 mower with a camera handles my yard better.


Week 4: The Budget Option, Worx Landroid L ($799)

I've installed 30+ robot mowers for clients, and the Worx Landroid is the one I recommend to people who don't want to think about it. It uses a perimeter wire, which is a pain to install. I spent 3 hours laying wire around my yard, and I've done this dozens of times. But once it's in, it works. No RTK, no vision, no signal loss. Just a wire and a mower that follows it.

The Landroid L handles my slope at about 85% reliability. It's rated for 30% slopes, and my 22-degree hill (about 40%) is beyond that. It made it up 9 times out of 10 in dry conditions. On wet grass, it slipped twice and needed a manual rescue. The cut quality is fine, but it's not as clean as the ANTHBOT or the ECOVACS. The blades are smaller and the deck is narrower.

For $799, it's a solid value if your yard is flat or gently sloped. If you have a real hill, keep looking.

The battery math: the Landroid L covers about 1,100 square feet per charge. My yard needs 5 sessions per mow cycle. That's more than the ANTHBOT's 3 sessions, and the Landroid takes 4 hours to charge versus the ANTHBOT's 2.5 hours. Over a week, that's a meaningful difference in how often the mower is actually cutting.


Week 5: The Wet Grass Test (The One That Matters)

I waited for a day with 1.2 inches of rain overnight. The grass was soaked, the ground was soft, and every mower I own was sitting in my garage. I ran them one at a time up the 22-degree slope.

The ANTHBOT M5: made it 3 feet before the rear wheels spun. Then it stopped, reversed, and tried a different angle. It took 4 attempts to get to the top. It never slid, but it also never looked confident. Final verdict: it climbs, but it's not graceful.

The ECOVACS Goat: slid 6 feet down the hill and cried for help. I had to carry it back to the dock.

The Luba 2 AWD: made it to the top on the first try. The AWD system is the real deal. It slipped once, corrected, and kept going. This is the only mower that handled wet grass without drama.

The Worx Landroid: slipped immediately, spun its wheels for 30 seconds, and gave up. It needed a manual push to get back to flat ground.

Here's the problem: the Luba 2 costs $2,299. The ANTHBOT costs $899. The Luba is better on wet hills, but it's worse at navigation, and it can't see obstacles. For most people, a dry hill is the realistic scenario. If you're mowing in the rain, you're not thinking straight.


What I'd Buy and Why

For most people: the ANTHBOT M5, $899.

It's the best bang for your buck, and it's not close. The vision navigation handles obstacles, the mapping takes 15 minutes, and it climbs dry hills without complaint. The wet grass performance is mediocre, but no mower under $2,000 does better. The 4G subscription is an extra cost I'd skip; the Bluetooth connection works fine if you're within 30 feet.

For steep, wet yards: the Luba 2 AWD, $2,299.

If your yard is genuinely steep and you get a lot of rain, the AWD system is worth the money. Just know what you're giving up: no vision navigation, RTK signal loss under trees, and a price that's 2.5 times the ANTHBOT. Test it within the return window.

Skip the ECOVACS Goat A2000, $1,999.

I can't recommend a mower that has a real chance of arriving defective. The dock placement requirement is infuriating, and the front wheels get hung up on sidewalk edges. When it works, it's beautiful. When it doesn't, you're stuck troubleshooting a $2,000 machine that won't cut a single blade of grass.

The slope ratings on every box are optimistic. I've got the notebook entries and the muddy shoe prints to prove it. Do your own math, test within the return window, and don't trust a spec sheet.
